Three PC rig proposals, with every gap visible

Each proposal names all nine core components, including a monitor. Compatibility verification is incomplete for all three. Resolve every unknown before using a proposal as a shopping list.

By The Hardware Pick editorsUpdated Research-based · not lab-tested

0 fully verified builds. “Verified” refers to the documented checks below. All nine parts are proposed; Six checks remain UNKNOWN per proposal: installed BIOS, RAM validation, full GPU/cable envelope, complete power budget, final display mode and physical assembly/cooling. These proposals have not been assembled or physically tested.

Read the status before the parts

PASS
The specific documented rule passes. A part-selection PASS confirms identity only.
FAIL
The documented values conflict. Change a part or the configuration.
UNKNOWN
A part, specification or configuration check is missing. This blocks a complete-build recommendation.

Overall status is FAIL when any rule fails, otherwise UNKNOWN while any rule is unresolved. Every rule must pass before the document checks can pass as a whole. Even then, that result would not establish assembly quality or real-world performance.

NVIDIA’s minimum PSU figures use a Ryzen 9 9950X system as their reference and may change with the configuration. The GPU dimensions below apply to the named Founders Edition only. Partner cards need their own specifications.

The proposals share a Ryzen 9 9950X platform to keep the component checklist consistent. CPU/GPU balance and value have not been evaluated. Operating system, peripherals and any extra fans are outside the nine-part inventory and need separate planning.

Documented layout for these checks

Conventional North XL Mesh with its three stock front fans, no front radiator and no side fan bracket. Keep both NH-D15 G2 standard fans and raise the front one 3 mm for the 35 mm RAM: published total height 171 mm versus the case’s 185 mm limit. The high side bracket would reduce that limit to 155 mm and fail this check.

Use the conservative two-tray 175 mm PSU limit for the 160 mm RMx unit. Place the 990 PRO in M.2_3, the FE GPU in PCIEX16(G5), and leave other expansion/M.2 slots empty. Plan A2/B2 memory at SPD 4800; EXPO 6000 is not a stability promise. GPU power uses the in-box NVIDIA adapter and the exact PSU’s dedicated PCIe leads, never EPS leads. The separately proposed display cable is Club 3D CAC-1091; its presence does not establish a negotiated display mode.

Changing the stated SKU, radiator, bracket, fan adjustment, storage slot or power-cable path requires another check. Front USB-C speed/revision remains unverified because older Fractal documentation differs from its current manual; no 20 Gbps result is promised.

Total price: unavailable. Performance and store availability have not been checked.

Evidence: AOC — Q27G3XMN product page and specs (U.S.)

Action: Read the compatibility checks below.

  10. GPU maker’s baseline PSU minimumPASS

Reason: 650 W manufacturer minimum compared with 850 W PSU rating. This checks only the stated limit.

Evidence: NVIDIA RTX 5070 family specifications · Corsair RM850x, CP-9020270-NA

Action: Use this as a baseline only. Check the complete-system budget and exact power cables separately.

  11. GPU length in the chosen case layoutPASS

Reason: 242 mm GPU length compared with 413 mm usable case length. This checks only the stated limit.

Evidence: NVIDIA RTX 5070 family specifications · Fractal North XL manual: conventional Mesh/TG

Action: Confirm the usable length with the chosen radiator, fans and drive cages; then check width, thickness and cable space.

  12. CPU and motherboard socketPASS

Reason: CPU socket AM5 and board socket AM5. This does not resolve installed BIOS.

Evidence: AMD Ryzen 9 9950X specifications · ASUS TUF GAMING X870-PLUS WIFI specifications

Action: Check the independent BIOS rule before recommending the complete rig.

  13. CPU support and installed BIOSUNKNOWN

Reason: ASUS lists 9950X for PCB all and BIOS ALL. The actual installed firmware and board revision have not been inspected; do not infer them from a purchase listing.

Evidence: ASUS CPU support: 9950X, PCB all, BIOS ALL

Action: Confirm the board revision, CPU support list, minimum BIOS and installed BIOS. Unknown BIOS cannot pass.

  14. RAM generation, capacity and supportUNKNOWN

Reason: The exact 2×16 GB DDR5 UDIMM kit is proposed at SPD 4800 in A2/B2, not promised at EXPO 6000. Exact module revision/QVL match and stability on the installed BIOS remain unverified.

Evidence: Corsair VENGEANCE CMK32GX5M2B6000Z30 · ASUS TUF GAMING X870-PLUS WIFI specifications · AMD Ryzen 9 9950X specifications

Action: Check the exact memory kit against board and CPU support, including capacity and chosen settings.

  15. Storage interface and lane sharingPASS

Reason: 990 PRO PCIe4x4 / M.2 2280 in M.2_3, documented PCIe4x4 / 2280. Leave M.2_2, M.2_4 and the lower PCIe slot empty; use the top GPU slot. This avoids the specific sharing pairs in the ASUS table.

Evidence: Samsung 990 PRO datasheet Rev 2.0 · ASUS TUF GAMING X870-PLUS WIFI specifications

Action: Use only the stated slot plan; other populated slots require a fresh lane-sharing check.

  16. Cooler socket, CPU and motherboard supportPASS

Reason: Noctua lists NH-D15 G2 standard compatible with both the exact 9950X CPU and ASUS motherboard. Use the supplied AM5 SecuFirm2+ hardware; thermal performance remains unmeasured.

Evidence: Noctua exact CPU compatibility matrix · Noctua exact motherboard compatibility matrix · Noctua NH-D15 G2 specifications

Action: Confirm the mounting kit and cooling requirements for the selected CPU.

  17. Cooler, RAM and case clearancePASS

Reason: RAM 35 mm, default clearance 32 mm; front fan raised 3 mm. Resulting cooler height 171 mm versus case limit 185 mm with side bracket absent. Published dimensions only; no manufacturing tolerance is invented.

Evidence: Corsair DDR5 module dimensions · Noctua NH-D15 G2 RAM/case adjustment · Fractal North XL cooler and side bracket limits

Action: Keep the stated fan adjustment and bracket position; inspect the actual fit during installation.

  18. Motherboard and case fitPASS

Reason: ATX 305 × 244 mm board in an ATX-compatible conventional North XL. Planned front wiring: case HD Audio → F_AUDIO; Power SW/Power LED → marked F_PANEL pins; USB-A pair → U5G_1011; USB-C → USB 20Gbps Type-C front-panel header. Connector matching is documented; actual wiring and USB-C speed/revision are not tested.

Evidence: ASUS TUF GAMING X870-PLUS WIFI specifications · ASUS TUF X870-PLUS WIFI English manual V2 · Fractal North XL manual: conventional Mesh/TG

Action: Confirm board form factor, standoffs and front-panel connections.

  19. PSU and case fitPASS

Reason: PSU length 160 mm versus 175 mm with 2 HDD trays. This checks the ATX unit length, not the real cable bend radius or connector space.

Evidence: Corsair RM850x, CP-9020270-NA · Fractal North XL manual: conventional Mesh/TG

Action: Use the declared tray layout and inspect cable routing during assembly.

  20. GPU thickness, width and cable spaceUNKNOWN

Reason: The FE length is documented separately. Case clearance from the installed GPU power connector to the side panel, full cable bend space and the assembled intake envelope have not been measured. External case width is not a usable internal clearance.

Evidence: NVIDIA RTX 5070 family specifications · Fractal North XL manual: conventional Mesh/TG · ASUS TUF GAMING X870-PLUS WIFI specifications

Action: Check GPU width, slots, expansion-slot layout, cable bend space and intake clearance. Length alone is insufficient.

  21. Complete-system power budgetUNKNOWN

Reason: The selected PSU meets NVIDIA’s minimum for a reference 9950X system, but that is not a measured bound for this complete board, memory, drive, fans, CPU settings and transient load. No invented headroom percentage is used.

    Evidence: NVIDIA RTX 5070 family specifications · Corsair RM850x, CP-9020270-NA · AMD Ryzen 9 9950X specifications

Action: Calculate the final configuration with CPU limits, accessories and manufacturer guidance. A GPU minimum alone is insufficient.

  22. Exact PSU cable and GPU connectorPASS

Reason: NVIDIA in-box GPU adapter requires 2 dedicated PCIe 6+2 leads; the exact RMx PSU supplies 3. Use only those PSU-specific original leads, not EPS leads or a daisy-chain substitute. Physical seating and cable clearance are separate.

Evidence: NVIDIA RTX 5070 family specifications · Corsair RMx included cable guide

Action: Follow both manufacturers’ connection instructions and fully seat every connector; never mix modular PSU cables.

  23. Motherboard power connectionsPASS

Reason: Board requires 1 ATX 24-pin and 2 EPS 8-pin connections; PSU supplies 1 and 2. PCIe cables are not substitutes for EPS.

Evidence: ASUS TUF GAMING X870-PLUS WIFI specifications · Corsair RMx included cable guide

Action: Connect the original 24-pin and both original EPS 4+4 cables according to the ASUS manual.

  24. Monitor signal path and intended modeUNKNOWN

Reason: 1440p59.951 timing and RGB 8 bpc are documented; the AOC PDF’s US regional applicability and DSC-off state are unconfirmed. CAC-1091 is a proposed separate accessory, not an assumed in-box cable.

Evidence: NVIDIA RTX 5070 family specifications · Club 3D CAC-1091 DP80 cable datasheet · AOC Q27G3XMN manual, regional applicability unconfirmed

Action: Choose resolution, refresh rate, color mode and cable; verify both ports and any DSC requirement. Matching connector names alone cannot pass.

  25. Cooling and installation planUNKNOWN

Reason: Plan: three stock front intake fans, no radiator/side bracket, two G2 cooler fans, front fan raised 3 mm, GPU horizontal and original PSU leads. Actual header wiring/current checks, assembly, thermals and noise remain untested.

Evidence: Fractal North XL manual: conventional Mesh/TG · ASUS TUF X870-PLUS WIFI English manual V2 · Noctua NH-D15 G2 RAM/case adjustment

Action: Document fan placement, airflow and installation clearances for the final configuration.

Action: Use this as a baseline only. Check the complete-system budget and exact power cables separately.

  11. GPU length in the chosen case layoutPASS

Reason: 304 mm GPU length compared with 413 mm usable case length. This checks only the stated limit.

Evidence: NVIDIA RTX 5090 specifications · Fractal North XL manual: conventional Mesh/TG

Action: Confirm the usable length with the chosen radiator, fans and drive cages; then check width, thickness and cable space.

  12. CPU and motherboard socketPASS

Reason: CPU socket AM5 and board socket AM5. This does not resolve installed BIOS.

Evidence: AMD Ryzen 9 9950X specifications · ASUS TUF GAMING X870-PLUS WIFI specifications

Action: Check the independent BIOS rule before recommending the complete rig.

  13. CPU support and installed BIOSUNKNOWN

Reason: ASUS lists 9950X for PCB all and BIOS ALL. The actual installed firmware and board revision have not been inspected; do not infer them from a purchase listing.

Evidence: ASUS CPU support: 9950X, PCB all, BIOS ALL

Action: Confirm the board revision, CPU support list, minimum BIOS and installed BIOS. Unknown BIOS cannot pass.

  14. RAM generation, capacity and supportUNKNOWN

Reason: The exact 2×16 GB DDR5 UDIMM kit is proposed at SPD 4800 in A2/B2, not promised at EXPO 6000. Exact module revision/QVL match and stability on the installed BIOS remain unverified.

Evidence: Corsair VENGEANCE CMK32GX5M2B6000Z30 · ASUS TUF GAMING X870-PLUS WIFI specifications · AMD Ryzen 9 9950X specifications

Action: Check the exact memory kit against board and CPU support, including capacity and chosen settings.

  15. Storage interface and lane sharingPASS

Reason: 990 PRO PCIe4x4 / M.2 2280 in M.2_3, documented PCIe4x4 / 2280. Leave M.2_2, M.2_4 and the lower PCIe slot empty; use the top GPU slot. This avoids the specific sharing pairs in the ASUS table.

Evidence: Samsung 990 PRO datasheet Rev 2.0 · ASUS TUF GAMING X870-PLUS WIFI specifications

Action: Use only the stated slot plan; other populated slots require a fresh lane-sharing check.

  16. Cooler socket, CPU and motherboard supportPASS

Reason: Noctua lists NH-D15 G2 standard compatible with both the exact 9950X CPU and ASUS motherboard. Use the supplied AM5 SecuFirm2+ hardware; thermal performance remains unmeasured.

Evidence: Noctua exact CPU compatibility matrix · Noctua exact motherboard compatibility matrix · Noctua NH-D15 G2 specifications

Action: Confirm the mounting kit and cooling requirements for the selected CPU.

  17. Cooler, RAM and case clearancePASS

Reason: RAM 35 mm, default clearance 32 mm; front fan raised 3 mm. Resulting cooler height 171 mm versus case limit 185 mm with side bracket absent. Published dimensions only; no manufacturing tolerance is invented.

Evidence: Corsair DDR5 module dimensions · Noctua NH-D15 G2 RAM/case adjustment · Fractal North XL cooler and side bracket limits

Action: Keep the stated fan adjustment and bracket position; inspect the actual fit during installation.

  18. Motherboard and case fitPASS

Reason: ATX 305 × 244 mm board in an ATX-compatible conventional North XL. Planned front wiring: case HD Audio → F_AUDIO; Power SW/Power LED → marked F_PANEL pins; USB-A pair → U5G_1011; USB-C → USB 20Gbps Type-C front-panel header. Connector matching is documented; actual wiring and USB-C speed/revision are not tested.

Evidence: ASUS TUF GAMING X870-PLUS WIFI specifications · ASUS TUF X870-PLUS WIFI English manual V2 · Fractal North XL manual: conventional Mesh/TG

Action: Confirm board form factor, standoffs and front-panel connections.

  19. PSU and case fitPASS

Reason: PSU length 160 mm versus 175 mm with 2 HDD trays. This checks the ATX unit length, not the real cable bend radius or connector space.

Evidence: Corsair RM1000x, CP-9020271-NA · Fractal North XL manual: conventional Mesh/TG

Evidence: NVIDIA RTX 5090 specifications · Fractal North XL manual: conventional Mesh/TG · ASUS TUF GAMING X870-PLUS WIFI specifications

    Evidence: NVIDIA RTX 5090 specifications · Corsair RM1000x, CP-9020271-NA · AMD Ryzen 9 9950X specifications

Action: Calculate the final configuration with CPU limits, accessories and manufacturer guidance. A GPU minimum alone is insufficient.

  22. Exact PSU cable and GPU connectorPASS

Reason: NVIDIA in-box GPU adapter requires 4 dedicated PCIe 6+2 leads; the exact RMx PSU supplies 4. Use only those PSU-specific original leads, not EPS leads or a daisy-chain substitute. Physical seating and cable clearance are separate.

Evidence: NVIDIA RTX 5090 specifications · Corsair RMx included cable guide

Action: Follow both manufacturers’ connection instructions and fully seat every connector; never mix modular PSU cables.

  23. Motherboard power connectionsPASS

Reason: Board requires 1 ATX 24-pin and 2 EPS 8-pin connections; PSU supplies 1 and 2. PCIe cables are not substitutes for EPS.

Evidence: ASUS TUF GAMING X870-PLUS WIFI specifications · Corsair RMx included cable guide

Action: Connect the original 24-pin and both original EPS 4+4 cables according to the ASUS manual.

  24. Monitor signal path and intended modeUNKNOWN

Reason: ASUS documents DP 4K60 and a DSC-off control; the consulted manual does not establish RGB 8 bpc for the exact US firmware/variant. CAC-1091 is proposed separately; no negotiated link was tested.

Evidence: NVIDIA RTX 5090 specifications · Club 3D CAC-1091 DP80 cable datasheet · ASUS PG27UCDM manual, Russian edition

Action: Choose resolution, refresh rate, color mode and cable; verify both ports and any DSC requirement. Matching connector names alone cannot pass.

  25. Cooling and installation planUNKNOWN

Reason: Plan: three stock front intake fans, no radiator/side bracket, two G2 cooler fans, front fan raised 3 mm, GPU horizontal and original PSU leads. Actual header wiring/current checks, assembly, thermals and noise remain untested.

Evidence: Fractal North XL manual: conventional Mesh/TG · ASUS TUF X870-PLUS WIFI English manual V2 · Noctua NH-D15 G2 RAM/case adjustment

Action: Document fan placement, airflow and installation clearances for the final configuration.
